The Goenka family has a history of going back 200 years in business. Dr. R.P. Goenka established the RPG group in 1979 and expanded into tyres, retail, entertainment & power. He founded the International Management Institute of India. He was also referred to as 'the takeover tycoon'. He was a member of parliament from 2000-2006. He chaired IIT Kharagpur for two terms & he was the president of the FICCI organization. He was awarded the "Order of the sacred treasure" from the emperor of Japan."
